In my opinion, the art of reading is vital to human life. Books not only help us escape to a different world when we are desperate to have a break from the rush, chaos and stress of everyday life, but they also teach us. They aid us in becoming better people. They expand our vocabulary and stretch our thinking. They transport us to places we have never visited, describe the horrors and harmony of the past and predict a sometimes daunting future. So, if you wouldn't consider yourself as a reader then maybe you should try and pick up a book and see how it goes. You might surprise yourself and enjoy it. Here's a list of some books I would love to read in the near future. If you have read any

please feel free to give me your opinions, but please no spoilers!!

Book: War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy

Why I would like to read it: Every since I saw the beautiful, mesmerising BBC TV adaptation and fell in love with the aesthetic of the masterpiece, I decided that I would make it my mission to finish this book. However seeing as this epic, which stands at 1,225 pages and has over 500 characters, is so impossibly long, it may be quite a challenge.

Book: A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf

Why I would like to read it: I recently discovered that this celebrated British writer once lived very locally to me and so I put A Room of One's Own at the top of my list. This is effectively an extended feminist essay, based on a series of lectures she delivered at Cambridge University in October 1928, and I am incredibly intrigued to see how her writing will compare to the thoughts and feelings of feminists all over the world today.

Book: 1984 by George Orwell

Why I would like to read it: I have been reminded that it is essential that I read this classic by numerous people and so it has been added to the list. I am fascinated to see how Orwell's vision compares to life today and whether we will be able to relate to his terrifying prediction of the future.

Book: Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte

Why I would like to read it: Seeing as I absolutely adored Jane Eyre, it would be preposterous if I didn't try this classic from the other Bronte sister. Of course everyone has heard of this renowned piece of literature so I hope it will meet expectations with it's promise of a wild, passionate, unique love story.

Book: Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

Why I would like to read it: Like 1984, this is a chilling, dystopian novel that anticipates the future and I am enthralled to discover it's prophecies. It is set in an "ideal society" that is dominated by "World Controllers" and discusses the use of genetic engineering, brainwashing and recreational sex and drugs. What terrifies me is that with the production of new, wonderful technology growing and growing, we may end up in a similar world.

Book: Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier

Why I would like to read it: Described as "one of the most influential novels of the twentieth century", I have been tempted by my English teacher's constant advice that my classmates and I should pick up this book. This classic, which has often been compared to Jane Eyre, seems both spellbinding and haunting and I can't wait to give it a go.

Book: The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

Why I would like to read it: After seeing Eve Bennett's video and her clear passion and love for this book, I am curious to purchase this renowned contemporary classic and see why she enjoyed it to the extent that she did. Plus, the television series has just become available on All 4 so I am desperate to read the book before watching it. Eve's video: https://youtu.be/8TBK2MYtn5k

Book: Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead by Nell Scovell and Sheryl Sandberg

Why I would like to read it: Unlike the other books on this list, this is not a classic. In fact, it is an international bestseller by the chief operating officer of Facebook that aims to empower women and support them in the workplace. I have recently been doing some work experience and the lady that I shadowed explained how I just had to read this book, describing how I shouldn't hold myself back and that this book should help me try and achieve my full potential.
